War Child

Don't cry now my baby
because one day, if we live through this bombardment,
the war will seem trivial to you and you will forget as
things like diapers, money and career consume you.

Your memory will erase the sight of blood and destruction, your neighbors crumpled body poking out from under her torn apartment
to be replaced with images of fancy restaurants, your lovers torso and glitzy nightclubs

The smell of burning flesh and explosions, tear gas and vomit
will fade away into that of grilling meat, fresh laundry and perfume.

The screams ringing in your ears will
be silenced by your laughter
and your nightmares will turn to fantasy.

You will see on the evening news pictures of another conflict, and you won't
recall how it once it was you being filmed by a multinational television channel.

Dont cry now my baby
because one day, if we live through this bombardment,
you will forget.
