It's nice to know the Egyptian authorities are so in touch with the needs of their people. Instead of perhaps addressing the cause of the recent food riots and pay-rise demands, the government is bent on cracking down on unwanted critics. Parliament, who was supposed to formulate anti-terrorism laws long ago, never got round to it and instead is renewing the 27-year old emergency law for another two years, saying it will give them the time necessary to formulate the needed laws. Interestingly enough, in 2006, Mubarak pulled exactly the same move. By allowing for emergency law, the government essentially allows for opposition members, notably those in the Muslim Brotherhood, to be arrested and imprisoned without trial. Some face military court hearings, which seriously undermines their chances of a fair trial. Perhaps not so coincidentally, Egyptian authorities on Sunday rounded up 18 Muslim Brotherhood members. The Muslim Brotherhood, however, are reporting only 9 as arrested. Have a look at the official Brotherhood website- the design is definitely stolen from the old BBC site!
